Funded training

Traineeships and apprenticeships

A traineeship means you're employed and training at the same time: you earn a wage, your employer gives you real work, and we deliver the qualification alongside it. You, your employer and NCS sign a registered training contract, and at the end you hold both experience and a nationally recognised qualification.

The Queensland Government subsidises eligible traineeships and apprenticeships through its Career Start program (certificate II and III) and Career Boost program (certificate IV and above). Some traineeships are fee-free, including our Certificate III in Individual Support traineeships.

For students and jobseekers

You can start a traineeship as a school leaver, a career changer, or while you're still at school: school-based apprenticeships and traineeships let years 10–12 students train and work part-time as part of their studies.

To access a subsidised place you need to be employed under a registered Queensland training contract in an eligible qualification and no longer be a school student (school-based trainees excepted). We'll confirm your eligibility with you before enrolment. Remember that no more than two government-funded apprenticeships or traineeships can be completed in any 10-year period, and using one affects your future access to subsidised training.

For employers

Taking on a trainee is a structured way to grow your own staff. You provide the employment, supervision and on-the-job training; we build the training plan with you, deliver the off-the-job component at times that suit your roster, and handle the paperwork with the department. Your Australian Apprenticeship Support Network provider signs up the training contract; we do the rest.

We deliver traineeships across Far North Queensland from Mossman, and at our Brisbane and Toowoomba offices; each course page lists where it's delivered. If you have several staff to qualify (an aged care roster, a hospitality venue, a front office), talk to us about running a group.

Employers must make sure employees understand the program conditions and have consented to enrol. Any costs beyond the co-contribution fee are optional, and must be agreed in writing before enrolment. You're not required to accept them.

Traineeship fees

Fees for subsidised apprenticeships and traineeships are set by the department, not by us: $1.60 per nominal training hour for each unit of competency. Eligible concessional trainees, and trainees under 17 who've left school without year 12, pay 40% of the fee. The exact total for each qualification is on its course page.

Fee-free traineeships. The following traineeships are fee-free for eligible trainees. You pay nothing:

  • CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (traineeship)
  • CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) (traineeship)
  • CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Community Care) (traineeship)
  • CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) (traineeship)

Under the Queensland Government's Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s initiative, eligible apprentices and trainees under 25 in high-priority qualifications pay no co-contribution fee; the department covers it. [VERIFY: which NCS qualifications qualify]
