CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support

CHC43121Nationally recognised training

The advancement qualification for disability support workers. It moves you from following individualised plans to shaping them: person-centred behaviour support, facilitating community participation and skill development, supporting people with complex needs, and managing the legal and ethical obligations that come with more responsibility.

Delivery is self-paced and blended, designed for people already working in the sector. Most students finish in four to six months alongside their job. You'll complete 120 hours of industry placement as part of assessment; if you're already employed in disability support, your workplace may count.

Fees and funding

Eligible Queenslanders study this course under the Career Boost program at the subsidised co-contribution fee shown above. Career Boost is specifically for people stepping up from a certificate III. If you hold a Certificate III in Individual Support and haven't completed a certificate IV or higher in the last 10 years, you're likely eligible. Check your eligibility. Full-fee study with a payment plan is available otherwise.

What you'll learn

Core units cover person-centred behaviour support, community participation and social inclusion, ongoing skills development, person-centred responses for people with complex needs, legal and ethical compliance, mental health, and maintaining work health and safety. Electives extend into communication strategies and working effectively across disability services.

Entry requirements

This course requires the Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) (the current CHC33021 or the superseded CHC33015 version) because it builds directly on that foundation. You'll also complete a language, literacy and numeracy check before enrolment, and hold the screening clearances placement providers require.

Recognition of prior learning

Experienced disability workers can apply for recognition of prior learning. See RPL and credit transfer. Subsidised places can't be used for a qualification achieved entirely through RPL.

Where it leads

Senior disability support worker, behaviour support practitioner (entry), community participation coordinator, and team leader roles across NDIS providers. It also leads to specialist skill sets like Disability Work - Behaviour Support and High Support and Complex Care, both subsidised under Career Boost for eligible students.
